What Is Excimer Laser in Ophthalmology?

Excimer Laser is a process in which the shape of the cornea is changed by using completely computer-controlled devices, thus eliminating the existing focusing and refractive defects.

The excimer laser method has been applied for more than 25 years for the correction of visual defects worldwide. It turns out to be a safe and very successful process. In line with the technological developments experienced in this process, the operations performed for visual defects have reached more successful qualities. To obtain the most effective results in excimer laser application, detailed preliminary examinations and providing appropriate conditions have a very important place.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery or refractive eye surgery, called eye surgery, is an eye surgery performed to correct the refractive errors (refractive defects) of the eye in order to minimize or eliminate the need for glasses or lenses. A UV laser with a wavelength of 193 nm is used, which is obtained by electrical excitation of the argon-fluoride gas mixture. Refractive surgery techniques have been widely applied in the world in the last 20 years for the correction of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Myopic; While it causes the perceived images to focus in front of the retina, in the case of hyperopia, the images are focused behind the retina, so there is a focusing problem and the images become blurred. The refractive errors in the eye, including astigmatism in which the horizontal and vertical refraction of the eye differ, appear as visual defects affecting every aspect of our lives and require intervention. With the excimer laser application, visual disturbances accompanied by pain in the eyes, decreased vision and discomfort can be effectively treated.

When Should I Apply to Excimer Laser?

Excimer laser application can be applied in cases up to -8 degrees in myopia, up to +4 degrees in hyperopia, and up to 4 degrees in astigmatism, which is one of the refractive errors. Excimer laser application can be applied depending on the degree of the defect in the eyes, and it can be applied to people over the age of 18 and whose eye structure is suitable. However, for the excimer laser application to be performed, the person must not have experienced more than 0.50 eye defect changes in the last year.
