Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is considered medically necessary when hypertrophy (excessive enlargement) of the labia minora (inner lips) in the genital area causes recurrent vaginal and urinary infections, irritation, painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), and movement restriction despite treatment. Excess skin can be twisted and pinched during exercise, physical activities, and intercourse, creating pain. This procedure can also be performed if one lip part is longer or has a different structure than the other, a condition known as “labial asymmetry.” Moreover, labiaplasty is also performed for aesthetic and gender-affirming purposes. The drooping, wrinkled, dark-colored, and asymmetrical look of the labia minora can create a variety of cosmetic and practical issues. As a result, labiaplasty surgery has psychological, aesthetic, sanitary, sexual, and functional advantages.

Labiaplasty surgery can be conducted in the hospital or in a proper clinical environment under local anesthetic, general anesthesia, or spinal anesthesia. It is more convenient for patients, especially if it can be done in a clinical environment under a local anesthetic.

Reduction Procedures of Labiaplasty

Depending on the reason for the labiaplasty, your surgeon will either:

  • Remove some tissue from the labia to make it smaller.
  • To expand the labia, a filler substance or fat is injected.
  • Rebuild a labia from other tissue.

There are two reduction procedures; one of them is the trimming method and the other is the wedge procedure. Using the trimming method, your surgeon eliminates superfluous tissue from the outside border of one or both sides of your inner lips, bringing it to level with or away from the inner lip margins.
